Essential Walt Disney World Tips for First Timers (Real Advice That Helps)
Want to make the most of your time at Walt Disney World Florida? These are the tips we genuinely wish we’d known before our first trip.
Disney holidays are incredible — but they can also be expensive, busy and surprisingly tiring. A little planning goes a long way in making the experience smoother, more enjoyable and far less stressful.
Here are our tried-and-tested Disney tips for families planning their first visit.
1. Expect Big Step Counts (And Plan Your Footwear)
Walt Disney World park days regularly hit 20,000–25,000+ steps, especially in the Florida heat.
Wear comfortable, broken-in trainers — don’t bring brand-new shoes unless you’ve tested them first.
Pack a spare pair in case yours get soaked on water rides or in Florida rainstorms.
A good foot cream before bed genuinely helps recovery after long park days - Boots have a real good one!
Trust us — your feet will thank you.
2. Think About Your Travel Group Needs
Consider comfort and accessibility before you travel:
Pushchairs aren’t just for toddlers — older kids often need downtime too.
Wheelchairs or mobility scooters can make a huge difference.
You can hire equipment at Walt Disney World or from external suppliers who deliver to your resort.
Convenience versus cost is usually the deciding factor.
3. Budget Carefully for Tickets
Park tickets are often the biggest expense after accommodation.
Typical UK ticket pricing (subject to change):
Around £1,700–£2,000 for a 14-day Disney ticket
Children aged 10+ are classed as adults for tickets and dining.
Plan this early so there are no surprises.
4. Always Pack Ponchos
Florida rain is intense — far heavier than typical UK showers.
Buy ponchos in the UK before travelling to save money.
Walmart is a good backup option locally.
Disney ponchos are great quality but cost more in the parks.
Rain doesn’t usually last long — but you’ll want to stay dry while it does.
5. Choose the Right Sunscreen
Florida sun is no joke.
Test sunscreen before your trip for skin reactions.
Spray or aerosol versions are often easier in the heat.
Reapply regularly — especially after water rides.
Comfort = more enjoyable park days.
6. Pack Flip-Flops for Rainy Days
This is a simple but brilliant tip:
Swap to flip-flops during heavy rain.
Let your trainers dry out.
Switch back once the weather clears.
Small change, big comfort upgrade. Trainers don’t dry that well in cool air-conditioned rooms!
7. Stay Hydrated (And Save Money)
Bottled water in Disney parks can cost around $4 or more per bottle.
Smart options:
Order supermarket delivery to your resort.
Use refillable bottles at quick-service locations and fountains.
Add flavour drops if you don’t love the taste of Florida water - the little Robinsons squeeze bottles are great to take with you.
Hydration massively improves stamina in the parks and as another tip, I often take the SiS or High 5 Hydration tabs to pop in water - full of electrolytes and easy to carry.
8. Don’t Forget Mosquito Repellent
Especially important:
Evenings
Resorts near water
Summer travel periods
Bring repellent and anti-itch cream — it makes a real difference.
9. Use Rain Time Strategically
When storms hit:
Queue for indoor rides
Watch shows
Take a snack break
Browse shops
Crowds often shift during rain, so it can actually work in your favour.
10. Master Mobile Ordering (And Smart Food Budgeting)
Disney’s mobile ordering is a huge time saver:
Skip queues for quick-service meals
Kids’ meals can be great value if budgets are tight
Pack snacks like cereal bars for park days
Top bonus tip: If parks feel overwhelming, hop on free Disney transport and visit a resort for a break. Great food options include:
Gasparilla Island Grill (Grand Floridian)
Roaring Fork (Wilderness Lodge)
Geyser Point (beautiful but slightly pricier)
