Novotel Birmingham Airport Review: Is It Worth Staying to Make Travel Day Easier?

Travel days always seem straightforward when you first book a holiday.

Then the reality hits a few days before departure: the early alarm, motorway traffic, airport parking, luggage, tired children and the stress of trying to make sure everything runs smoothly before you’ve even reached the terminal.

That’s exactly why airport hotels can sometimes completely change the start of a trip.

For this stay, we booked the Novotel Birmingham Airport, located directly opposite the terminal at Birmingham Airport. And when we say opposite, we genuinely mean directly across the road.

As a family who travels regularly, we’ve increasingly found that staying at the airport the night before isn’t always about luxury. It’s about removing friction from travel day. And honestly, that’s exactly what this hotel did well.

Novotel Birmingham Airport

The Biggest Advantage Is Simplicity

The location is unquestionably the main reason to stay here. Novotel Birmingham Airport sits around a two-minute walk from departures with:

  • no shuttle buses

  • no external transfers

  • no loading luggage back into the car at 4am

  • and no waiting around outside for transport.

For families especially, that convenience changes the entire pace of travel day.

Instead of waking up stressed about traffic or parking delays, you simply get ready and walk straight into the terminal.

That sounds like a small thing, but it removes a surprising amount of pressure from the start of a holiday. And ultimately, that simplicity is exactly what you’re paying for.

First Impressions & Check-In

From the outside, the hotel looks fairly typical of an airport property and slightly older in style. Inside though, it feels much more modern.

The reception and lobby areas were clean, bright and contemporary, creating a much better first impression once you walk through the doors. The atmosphere felt calm rather than chaotic, which is exactly what you want before travelling.

Check-in itself was quick and efficient throughout our stay.

If you regularly stay in Accor hotels, it’s also worth signing up to ALL – Accor Live Limitless before arrival. We registered beforehand and received complimentary drink vouchers for the bar, which was a nice little extra and helped the evening feel slightly more relaxed before the trip.

Small touches like that don’t transform the experience, but they do help the stay feel smoother overall.

The Family Room Was Practical More Than Luxurious

We booked a family room for the four of us and overall it worked very well for a short overnight airport stay.

The room itself felt modern, clean and sensibly designed without trying to be overly stylish or luxurious. More importantly, there was enough space for luggage and getting organised without the room immediately feeling cramped once everything was unpacked.

The beds were comfortable, everything felt properly prepared on arrival and we slept well throughout the night — which is probably the single most important thing for any airport hotel.

One feature we particularly appreciated was the bathroom setup.

The toilet was separated from the main bathroom and shower area, which made getting everybody ready in the morning far easier. With four people trying to shower, brush teeth and organise hand luggage before an early flight, little practical details like that genuinely matter.

Despite being directly opposite Birmingham Airport, the room was also surprisingly quiet overnight. We heard very little external noise, which is always one of the biggest concerns with airport hotels.

Some rooms also overlook the airport itself, which adds a nice sense of excitement before travelling, especially if you enjoy watching aircraft movements before a trip.

Some rooms offer views of the airport, which adds to that “holiday starting” feeling — especially if you enjoy watching aircraft movements before your flight.

Restaurant & Breakfast Experience

We ate both dinner and breakfast at the hotel during our stay.

Dinner itself was perfectly decent overall, with family-friendly options, generous portions and food quality that was absolutely acceptable for an airport hotel.

The main issue during our visit was actually the speed of service rather than the food itself.

Everything felt noticeably slower than we expected, particularly considering many guests staying here are likely travelling early the next morning and not necessarily looking for a long evening meal experience.

One thing also worth noting was that a service charge had automatically been added to the bill without it being clearly highlighted beforehand.

We’re absolutely happy to pay for good service and have no issue tipping where it’s deserved, but personally we do think automatic charges should be clearly communicated upfront rather than appearing unexpectedly at the end of the meal.

The breakfast experience was much stronger overall.

It was buffet-style with a good range of:

  • cooked breakfast items

  • pastries

  • cereals

  • fruit

  • yoghurt

  • and hot drinks.

Everything was self-service, regularly replenished and generally worked exactly as you’d want before heading to the airport.

Why Airport Hotels Change the Start of a Holiday

One of the biggest things airport hotels improve isn’t necessarily convenience itself. It’s the mindset shift.

Instead of treating the airport journey as another stressful part of the holiday, the trip effectively begins the night before. You’re already there, already settled and not constantly calculating timings in the back of your mind.

That relaxed start makes a bigger difference than people sometimes realise, particularly with children.

And because the Novotel Birmingham Airport removes so much of the usual airport morning hassle, it succeeds in exactly the area where airport hotels matter most.

Not luxury.
Not facilities.
Not destination appeal.

Just making travel day noticeably easier.

Who Is This Hotel Best Suited For?

Novotel Birmingham Airport works particularly well for:

  • families travelling with children

  • early morning departures

  • regular Birmingham Airport users

  • travellers wanting to reduce stress

  • and anyone prioritising convenience over luxury.

It’s not a luxury hotel or somewhere you’d book as part of a city break. But that’s also not really the point. What it offers is practicality, comfort and one of the easiest airport hotel experiences you’ll find at Birmingham Airport.

Final Thoughts: Would We Stay Again?

Yes — absolutely.

The location alone makes Novotel Birmingham Airport difficult to beat if your priority is making travel day easier.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, the hotel was quieter than we expected and the overall experience removed a huge amount of stress from the start of the trip.

While the restaurant service could definitely have been quicker during our visit, the stay still delivered exactly what we wanted from an airport hotel:

  • simplicity

  • comfort

  • practicality

  • and a smoother start to the holiday.

And honestly, sometimes that convenience is worth far more than luxury extras.
