Best Gatwick Airport Hotels Before a Flight: Sofitel vs Premier Inn
Choosing the right airport hotel can have a bigger impact on your holiday than most people realise.
For many travellers, an airport hotel is simply somewhere to sleep before an early flight. However, after using airport hotels before both cruises and long-haul holidays, we’ve found that the right stay can completely change how travel day feels. A good airport hotel removes stress, makes the morning easier and allows the holiday to begin the night before rather than at the departure gate.
Many of our recent airport hotel stays have been before Florida holidays, where a relaxed start can make a huge difference to the overall trip. If you’re currently planning your own Florida adventure, you’ll find plenty of additional planning guides in our Florida Travel Hub.
When flying from Gatwick, two of the most popular options are the Sofitel Gatwick and the Premier Inn Gatwick North Terminal. Both are located next to the North Terminal, both allow you to walk to the airport and both solve the practical challenge of an early departure.
The experience, however, feels very different. If you’re trying to decide which Gatwick airport hotel is right for your next trip, here’s how we’d approach the decision.
What Actually Matters Before an Early Flight?
When comparing airport hotels, it’s easy to focus on room categories, facilities and star ratings. In reality, most travellers are looking for something much simpler.
They want a comfortable night’s sleep, an easy route to the terminal and a stress-free start to the holiday.
That’s particularly true when travelling long haul. Whether you’re heading to Florida, joining a cruise or simply facing an early departure, the quality of the night before can have a surprisingly large impact on the first day of your trip.
Over the years we’ve realised that atmosphere is often the deciding factor. Some airport hotels feel calm and relaxing, while others feel busy and functional. That difference may sound small, but it can completely change how prepared you feel when travel day arrives.
Sofitel Gatwick: A Calmer Start to the Holiday
If somebody asked us which hotel we’d personally choose before a long-haul flight tomorrow, the answer would be the Sofitel.
The biggest reason isn’t the direct terminal connection, although that certainly helps. Instead, it’s the overall experience the hotel provides.
From the moment we arrived, the Sofitel felt noticeably calmer than many airport hotels we’ve used. Despite being attached to one of the busiest airports in the country, the public areas never felt crowded or chaotic and the overall atmosphere felt much more relaxed than we expected.
That sense of calm continued into the rooms. We had originally booked a family room but were allocated two connected twin rooms instead, which actually worked very well for our family. The rooms were comfortable, well maintained and exceptionally quiet, something that isn’t always guaranteed in an airport hotel.
What stood out most, however, was the quality of the sleep. The beds were among the most comfortable we’ve experienced in any airport hotel and everyone slept exceptionally well before travel day. When you’re facing an early flight and a long day of travelling, that makes a huge difference.
The Sofitel rooms provided some of the best sleep we’ve experienced in an airport hotel.
We covered our Sofitel stay as part of our Florida Travel Day journey from Durham to Gatwick before flying to Orlando. The video includes the hotel, the room, our journey across London and how we approached travel day as a family.
The covered walkway linking the hotel directly to Gatwick North Terminal is often highlighted as one of the Sofitel’s biggest advantages. It is certainly convenient, particularly if the weather isn’t great, but we’d be careful not to overstate its importance. Crossing a road and using a lift at the Premier Inn isn’t exactly a major inconvenience.
The tunnel is a nice benefit, but it isn’t the reason we’d choose the Sofitel.
For us, the deciding factor was the overall atmosphere. The hotel felt quieter, calmer and more relaxing throughout our stay, which is exactly what we look for before a holiday.
The covered walkway provides direct access between the Sofitel and Gatwick North Terminal.
Premier Inn Gatwick North Terminal: Practical and Affordable
The Premier Inn offers a very different type of stay and for many travellers it will make complete sense.
It’s usually considerably cheaper than the Sofitel, it’s still within easy walking distance of the terminal and it delivers exactly what most people expect from a Premier Inn. The rooms are functional, familiar and provide everything most travellers need for a single overnight stay before a flight.
Our room was perfectly acceptable and broadly in line with what we’ve experienced from Premier Inn elsewhere. If you’ve stayed with the brand before, you’ll probably know exactly what to expect.
The biggest difference for us wasn’t the room itself. It was the overall feel of the hotel. During our stay, the public areas felt extremely busy and the restaurant was packed. Families were everywhere, children were running around and the atmosphere felt considerably more hectic than what we personally look for before an early flight.
Some travellers may actually enjoy that livelier environment, particularly if they’re travelling with younger children, but for us it created a very different experience from the Sofitel.
The restaurant was much what you’d expect from Premier Inn. The food was perfectly reasonable, service was fine and everything worked as it should. However, it felt more functional than memorable and certainly wasn’t somewhere we’d choose as part of the holiday experience itself.
That doesn’t make the Premier Inn a bad choice. In fact, for travellers prioritising budget and location, it remains a perfectly sensible option. The question is really whether you’re simply looking for somewhere convenient to sleep or whether you want the hotel to become part of the holiday experience.
Food and Dining
Interestingly, food wasn’t a major factor in our decision between the two hotels.
During our Sofitel stay we actually chose to head into the terminal and eat at Giraffe. We’ve always found it a reliable family option and it caters particularly well for gluten-free dining, which made it an easy choice for us. The fact that both hotels sit next to the terminal means you’re not restricted to eating within the hotel itself, which gives you far more flexibility than many airport hotels offer.
We chose to eat in the terminal rather than the hotel itself as Giraffe offers exceptional Gluten Free options.
If you’re planning a Florida holiday, you’ll see more of this travel day experience in our Florida travel content, including our journey from Durham to Gatwick before flying to MCO, over on our YouTube channel.
Which Hotel Would We Choose Again?
This is where the comparison becomes relatively straightforward.
If budget was the primary consideration, the Premier Inn would still deserve serious consideration. It’s close to the terminal, provides everything most travellers need and offers a practical solution for an early morning departure.
However, if somebody asked us which hotel we’d personally book for our next Florida holiday, cruise or long-haul trip, we’d choose the Sofitel without hesitation.
The reason isn’t the direct tunnel to the terminal and it isn’t simply because the rooms felt more premium. What ultimately separated the two hotels for us was the overall experience. The Sofitel delivered the calm, quiet and relaxing start to a holiday that we increasingly value, while the Premier Inn felt much busier and more functional.
Neither approach is right or wrong. They’re simply designed for different types of traveller.
If you’re looking for a straightforward overnight stay before a flight, the Premier Inn remains a practical choice. If you’re looking for the most relaxing possible start to your holiday, we believe the Sofitel justifies the additional cost.
Final Thoughts
Both hotels solve the same problem. They place you within easy reach of Gatwick Airport, remove the stress of an early morning journey and make travel day significantly easier. The difference lies in the experience they provide.
The Premier Inn focuses on practicality, value and convenience, while the Sofitel offers a noticeably calmer and more premium start to the holiday. Having stayed at both, we know which one we’d choose for our own trips, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically the right choice for everyone.
Ultimately, the best Gatwick airport hotel depends on what matters most to you. If budget is your priority, the Premier Inn remains a sensible option. If comfort, atmosphere and a more relaxed start to your holiday matter more, we’d choose the Sofitel every time.
