Hilton Edinburgh Carlton Review – Is It Worth It for a Family City Break?
Edinburgh is the sort of city where location can make a huge difference to a short break. When you only have a night or two, spending half the trip travelling backwards and forwards to your hotel does not make much sense if you can stay right in the middle of everything.
That was one of the main reasons we chose Hilton Edinburgh Carlton for a one-night family stay. We were travelling by train, wanted to explore as much of Edinburgh as possible and needed somewhere comfortable for four people without making the hotel itself the focus of the trip.
For that kind of stay, it worked extremely well. The location was excellent, our family room was considerably more spacious than we expected, the bathroom was particularly good and breakfast was one of the stronger hotel breakfasts we have had on a city break. There was one watch-out, though: our room faced towards the street and there was some early-morning noise, particularly from rubbish and glass collections. It did not ruin the stay, but lighter sleepers may want to request a room away from the main road.

Why We Chose Hilton Edinburgh Carlton
Location was the biggest factor. We arrived in Edinburgh by train, and Hilton Edinburgh Carlton is very conveniently placed for Waverley station and the Royal Mile. That meant we could arrive, drop our bags and start exploring without needing to organise taxis or spend a chunk of a very short trip getting across the city.
Edinburgh is also compact enough that a central hotel can remove a lot of transport from the itinerary. Once we were checked in, much of what we wanted to do was accessible on foot, with restaurants, coffee shops and the main city-centre areas all close by.
We had looked at other hotels, including some properties that would have offered a more luxurious stay, but that was not really what this particular trip needed. On our Paris city break, where we deliberately chose a more luxurious hotel, the hotel itself became a much bigger part of the experience. Edinburgh was different. We wanted a good room, a strong breakfast and a location that made the city easy.
The exterior was not particularly photogenic during our visit because parts of the building were covered in scaffolding and there were works taking place outside. None of that materially affected our stay, so it became much less relevant once we were through the doors.
Inside, the hotel felt smart and well maintained. Check-in was efficient and professional without being particularly warm or unfriendly. Everything worked, we got the information we needed and we were quickly able to get on with the trip.
Our Family Room Was Bigger Than We Expected
We had booked a family room for the four of us and were pleasantly surprised by how much space we had.
City-centre family rooms can sometimes technically sleep four without giving four people much room to actually live in them. That was not the case here. There was enough floor space for us to move around comfortably, room for our luggage and none of the immediate feeling that everybody was on top of each other.
The styling itself was fairly straightforward rather than particularly memorable, but the room was clean, comfortable and felt appropriate for the level of hotel. For a short city stay, practicality mattered more to us than elaborate design.

The bathroom was probably more impressive than the bedroom. It was a very good size, modern and nicely fitted out, and felt like a genuine strength of the room rather than something squeezed into the remaining space.

Overall, the room did exactly what we wanted it to do. It gave four of us enough space to stay comfortably in the centre of Edinburgh without feeling as though we had compromised purely for the location.
The Main Watch-Out Is Street Noise
The one thing we would think about more carefully on another stay is the room location. There was some street noise, particularly during the early hours when rubbish was being collected and glass bottles were being moved. It was not constant and we would not describe the room as unbearably noisy, but it was noticeable. Interestingly, it bothered some of us more than others. I slept through much of it, while Anna and the girls were more aware of what was happening outside.
That makes this less of a reason not to stay and more of a room-request issue. If you are a light sleeper, we would ask whether a room away from the main road is available. A very central Edinburgh location inevitably comes with some activity outside, and in our case the early-morning collections were the main source of disturbance. It certainly was not enough to change our overall opinion of the hotel, but it is something we would want to know before booking.
Breakfast Was One of the Stronger Parts of the Stay
Breakfast was very good and suited this trip particularly well.
There was a full buffet with plenty of choice, alongside a menu and additional options. Everything was clearly labelled, which immediately made the whole experience easier, particularly because gluten-free food is something we need to consider as a family.
The gluten-free selection was genuinely strong. The information was clear, there were proper choices available and the staff handled the dietary requirements well rather than making it feel like an awkward special request. That matters more than simply having one gluten-free item tucked away somewhere. A good hotel breakfast should allow everybody to start the day normally, and that was largely how it felt here.

We also liked that breakfast did not feel chaotic. On a short city break, starting the morning with a decent meal before heading back out can be much more appealing than immediately hunting around for somewhere to eat, particularly when you already know you have a full day ahead.
Who Does Hilton Edinburgh Carlton Suit?
We think the hotel makes most sense for people who value location and practicality. For a family arriving by train, it was particularly convenient because we could get into Edinburgh and start the trip almost immediately. The same location also works well for couples or anyone planning a short break centred around the Royal Mile and the city centre.
It is less about resort facilities or spending long periods inside the hotel. We did not come to Edinburgh expecting a pool day, spa afternoon or an elaborate luxury experience. The hotel was there to make the rest of the trip easier, and that is where it succeeded.
That distinction matters when judging value. Sometimes spending more on the hotel materially improves the holiday. Sometimes the better decision is choosing a very good base and putting the rest of the budget into the destination itself. For this trip, Hilton Edinburgh Carlton felt much closer to the second option.
Would We Stay at Hilton Edinburgh Carlton Again?
Yes as the combination of location, room size, modern bathroom and very good breakfast made it a strong fit for our family city break. We would happily consider staying again, particularly if we were travelling to Edinburgh by train and wanted to be straight into the city rather than dealing with additional transport.
The street noise is the only thing we would approach differently. If possible, we would request a room away from the main road, especially if anybody travelling was a particularly light sleeper.
Beyond that, there was very little about the stay that made us think we had chosen the wrong hotel. Hilton Edinburgh Carlton was not trying to be the destination, and for this trip that was exactly the point.
Edinburgh itself was the focus, while the hotel gave us a comfortable, spacious and extremely convenient base in the middle of the city. For a short family break where location and practicality mattered more than resort-style facilities, that was exactly what we needed.
